The phone buzzed on the counter. I snatched it up, desperate to be told Tom and Scott had found something on John. I had just come back from work, and sat by my laptop, researching Amelia and the church online. The display told me it was Danni, and I felt a ripple of anxiety run through me. I hadn’t talked to my best friend in a long time, and every part of my body missed her desperately.

“Billie Ann, you free for wine? I’m dying to see your new place.” Danni’s voice was like a balm, smoothing over the jagged edges of my day. I looked at my case files, work, spread out on the table, and thought for a second that I didn’t have any time, but then decided against it. It was, after all, Danni. She had been out of town for two weeks visiting her grandmother in Wisconsin who was sick. Hearing her voice made my heart flutter with joy. I missed her so much, it almost hurt. I would do anything for her. Anything.

“Sure. I’ll text you the address. Come over.”

I ended the call and surveyed the chaos of unpacked boxes. No time for that now. I removed the case files, and rushed into the bedroom. I riffled through my clothes, settling on a clean shirt that didn’t scream “off-duty homicide detective.” The mirror reflected someone trying to piece herself back together—short blonde hair tousled just right, a stroke of mascara to hide the fatigue.

Excitement bubbled up as I dabbed on lip gloss. Seeing Danni always did that to me.

The purr of an engine cut through the stillness outside. I peered through the window just as her car slid into a space right in front of my building. My heartbeat picked up. I flicked the lock and swung the door open.

“Hey,” Danni called out. A breeze toyed with her hair, loose strands dancing around her face.

“Over here,” I said, leaning on the doorframe.

Her smile reached me before she did, warm and familiar, melting away the day’s tension. She climbed the steps, her boots echoing on the concrete.

“Place looks great from the outside,” she said, her eyes scanning the facade.

“It’s not much on the inside,” I said.

She crossed the threshold and we wrapped each other in a hug that spoke volumes. Her presence was a comfort, something I’d been missing. I was a little embarrassed about how small my place was, and hoped she wouldn’t notice.

“Come on, let’s get that wine,” I said, my voice muffled against her shoulder.

“Lead the way.” She stepped back, but our fingers lingered together for a moment longer.

I fetched the Merlot from the fridge, popping the cork. The glug of wine into glasses underscored the quiet hum of anticipation between us. We always had wine; it always quelled the anxiety between us. Back when we hadn’t yet admitted our feelings to one another, it helped us overcome our nerves and open up. Wine had become a ritual we both needed.

“Cheers,” she said, clinking her glass lightly against mine.
